To be fair, Cheryl Cole has had plenty to be sad about lately: She’s suffered through several humiliating infidelity scandals on the part of footballer and former husband Ashley Cole that led to a very public divorce not to mention a severe malaria scare earlier this year that nearly led to her death! I think we can all agree she has not had it easy this year. It’s no wonder she named her album ‘Messy Little Raindrops’.
Back in the day when Cheryl had her girls in the popular band ‘Girls Aloud’ Cheryl was happy and the group’s songs reflected their happiness as a group. The girl group have marked their success by achieving twenty consecutive top ten singles (including four number ones) in the UK and five studio albums which have all been certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), two of which went to number one in the UK. In July 2009, Girls Aloud announced they would take a year-long hiatus in the pursuit of solo projects in which Cheryl Cole’s solo career began.
Through her public divorce with Ashley, Cheryl’s songs became nothing but sadness. Her fans could tell this through her songs ‘The Flood’ and ‘Raindrops’ released on the new album. Cheryl also appeared on the ‘Piers Morgan’s Life Stories’ show in which her story and tears all came out, which for loyal fans was depressing and sad to watch. Cheryl’s album had now become ‘soppy’ sad songs that reflected the traumas that have been going on in her life recently as opposed to great pop songs that reflected her happy days in Girls Aloud. This I believe let her album down despite the number one song ‘Promise this’ which received a high number of downloads, but soon fell back down the charts list after just over a week. We hope Cheryl gets back to her old self again soon.
